The Automotive X Prize Calls for 100 MPGe Mainstream Automobiles
The X Prize foundation creates and manages prizes, which are used to motivate inventors and innovative thinkers to solve some of the biggest problems facing the world today. This includes the Ansari X Prize, which was designed to challenge engineers to make space travel safe, affordable and available to everyone. The first Ansari X Prize winner was given to Mojave Aerospace Ventures and their SpaceShipOne. The X Prize is basically an incentive to try and jump-start the entrepreneurs and engineers minds.

As well as the Ansari X Prize, the foundation also has an automotive X Prize. Similar to the Ansari, the Automotive Prize goal is to create a super efficient automobile that would be sold to the public. The foundation is doing this because they want to drastically reduce oil consumption and dangerous emissions as well as create a new desirable mainstream vehicle, which the public would want to buy.
If one wanted to enter the X Prize competition one would have to create a team and send the X Prize foundation your information. In order to win the prize the team would have to follow the guidelines, which are as follows:
- Achieve our main goal (above)
- Be simple to understand and easy to communicate
- Benefit the world - this is a global challenge
- Result in real cars available for purchase, not concept cars
- Remain independent, fair, non-partisan, and technology-neutral
- Provide clear technical boundaries (i.e., for fuel-efficiency, emissions, safety, manufacturability, performance, capacity, etc.)
- Offer a “level playing field” that attracts both existing automobile manufacturers and newcomers
- Attract a balanced array of private investment, donors, sponsors, and partners to help competitors succeed (e.g., manufacturing assistance, testing resources, etc.)
- Make heroes out of the competitors and winner(s) through unprecedented exposure, media coverage and a significant cash award
- Educate the public on key issues
The automotive X Prize will be awarded in 2009
