Doing the Right Thing and Doing It Right

As our consumption of natural resources continues to take its toll on the environment, it has never been more important to explore other means of sustaining our way of life. The Society for Sustainable Mobility (SSM) is a revolutionary movement to develop a much needed alternative to conventional automobiles.

The Mission of the Society for Sustainable Mobility (SSM) is to create a three-part solution to our dependency on natural resources:

1. Sustainable Technologies: to improve the energy efficiency of automobiles;
2. Open-design Infrastructure: To accelerate sustainable technologies into the marketplace and to harness help from great minds around the world;
3. Business Strategy: to commercialize our products and bring them to the hands of consumers.

The SSM-OSGV goal is to engage in fair market competition in the most polluting automotive market segments with functionally superior products that are cleaner and more affordable; thus, erode the incentives for major automakers to remain in these segments and encourage them to invest more in future technologies.

Bill Ford, the chairman of Ford Motor Company once said, “The best way to get the auto industry to stop dragging its feet is to have us race against each other.” (Quoting SUV.ORG) It seems like the most logical and effective way is to challenge the industry in its own backyard.

Vision

Often times, the problems with alternative fuel technologies are not with the technologies themselves but with the technology adoption and insertion processes. Unfortunately, mass-produced vehicle platforms are currently owned by only a handful of major corporations around the world. The proprietary natures of these platforms are hindering the commercialization of the latest sustainable technologies - technologies that could have major effects on our environment.

Our sole reliance on for-profit automakers to bring us clean vehicles has failed. Nonetheless, we cannot underestimate the importance of private capital in commercialization of these exciting technologies. Funding and vision to bring forth clean vehicles is critical.

The need for a brand new vehicle platform becomes very apparent - a platform owned and created by a non-profit organization whose charter is to fight global warming. Under the auspices of a non-profit, the availability of energy-saving technologies will no longer be hampered by the status quo.

The Vision of SSM with our Open Source Green Vehicle (OSGV) Project is to revolutionize the industry by encouraging technology insertions through a non-profit vehicle platform. And through our open-design infrastructure we encourage and respect both private and public interests.

Imagine designing a brand new vehicle from scratch – It’s all about going back to the basics. It’s all about human mobility. It’s all about the environment. At SSM, our creativity is not bound by corporate greed and politics – just our imagination and dedication.
