SSM-OSGV Open Design Model

Overview

The vehicle will be design through an international collaborative effort much like the development of open-source software. All design data and test data will be shared and accessible from the internet. Similar to “Open Source”, technical data is governed by a public license.

Product Data Management System for Open Design Automotive EngineeringProduct structures are managed in a web based Product Data Management (PDM) systems.

All technical data will be governed by a special open-design license to ensure that any new designs that were derived from the original design will be open to the public.

Open Design License Agreement

OSGV technical data (documentation, designs, computer models, simulations, test results, etc.) will be distributed under a GPL-like public license, called the SSM-OSGV Open Design Agreement:

Licensees may view, adapt, modify and redistribute SSM-OSGV technical data, however, any technical data derived from SSM-OSGV technical data must also be governed by the same SSM-OSGV license and made available to the public through an SSM-OSGV approved medium (e.g. osgv.org).

Except when the interface specification remains intact: the new part conforms to its source control / specification control / interface control drawings; only then the private entities may retain the proprietary status of design. See the illustration below.

Open Design Engineering/Production Flow

If the specification has been updated, the new source control drawings as well as any impacts to any existing SSM-OSGV parts shall be disclosed.

Licensee agrees NOT to produce actual products based on the technical data (mainly for safety reasons). Production of actual parts requires our “Production License”, which is still in work.

Production License

SSM-OSGV technical data may be used to produce articles of manufacture, under SSM-OSGV Production License, which is still in work:

End products (e.g. finished vehicles) with parts under SSM-OSGV licenses must comply with OSGV vehicle standards (limits on emission, weight, fuel economy, etc).

Top assembly manufacturers are responsible to certify their SSM-OSGV-derived vehicles meet government standards in their target markets, such as the United States’ Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

For safety reasons, only SSM-OSGV approved facilities may manufacture parts derived from SSM-OSGV technical data.

How to Contribute

We are still working on connecting the different pieces of our Open Design infrastructure together. You will need a login for each of the different pieces of software tools on the web site. Please follow these steps to keep yourself in the loop:

  1. SSM-OSGV Forum: Sign up for an account, and then go under “Usergroups” and request to join the “Contributor Group”.
  2. SSM-OSGV PDMWiki System: Sign up for an account if you’d like to contribute technical data to the project.
  3. Subscribe to our Forum’s RSS Feed: to received update on forum any posts / categories.
  4. Subscribe to our Blog’s RSS Feed: do the same for our main blog - we regularly make announcements through our blog software.
  5. Send us an email: and let our team know that you are interested in contributing to the project.

NOTE: The forum and wiki both require login and special permissions to write posts or make changes. Unfortunately, we had been hit by spam before and this is the only effective way to eliminate spam activities. We accept anonymous contribution but at a minimum a valid email address must be provided.

Welcome to SSM-OSGV Project!
